Pet Behavior Questions Answered with Bill Moller of WGN

Pet Talk with Bill Moller of WGN Radio.

Spike O'Dell's dog, Stoney, was posted on Bill's pet page. ?You can send in photos of your pets too ?- Bill and I want to see them, email photos to wgmoller@gmail.com.

I talk about some great ?new pet products for the howlidays, for your own pets, or pets of friends, relatives or neighbors.

As always I try to help out listeners:

- There's the cat who goes number two in the sink. My solutions: See your veterinarian to determine if the issue isn't physical, or at least there's a physical contributing factor. Also, how do the cats get along? Often, cats who go potty up high are seeking a comfortable lookout

- Sibling rivalry, the case of two brothers who don't get along. We know these guys don't get along....The question I reply to is what to do about it.

Allen, Heat top short-handed Spurs 105-100

MIAMI (AP) ? Ray Allen's 3-pointer with 22.6 seconds left gave the Miami Heat the lead, and they held on to beat the short-handed San Antonio Spurs 105-100 on Thursday night to remain perfect at home this season.

The Spurs played without Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green, all sent home to rest in a move that raised the ire of NBA Commissioner David Stern, who said San Antonio would be sanctioned for that decision.

Still, the Heat needed to rally late. Down by one, LeBron James nearly lost the ball in the lane, then recovered and found Allen ? who has already hit three late-game 3s to help Miami win at home this season, all set up by the reigning MVP.

Article Marketing will Get the Best Link Popularity for an Online ...

As an online business owner your success depends on the amount of targeted traffic that you manage to generate to your website. Link popularity is a term used to measure the number and quality of links to your website that happens when other websites link to yours. Focusing on building links to your website is where you need to concentrate your efforts.

There are a number of different methods that you can use to begin building back links to your website, but the majority of them take time and a certain amount of effort, and some of them can also be a pretty tedious and boring task to undertake. As long as search engines continue to rank your website by measuring the link popularity you will have to keep working on link building practices. Unfortunately it is not the kind of thing that you can do once and forget about it.

The good thing about building link popularity to your online business website is that it need not be difficult, as you can vary the tasks involved to make it more interesting to do. Here are some of the ways that you can get links to your site, keeping in mind that one way back links are superior to any other kind.

Commenting on other peoples? blogs or in forums is a good way to build links as you can usually add a link to your website within your signature. You can submit your website to the various search engines or you can do article marketing, which is in my opinion is one of the best and least boring ways of building link popularity to a website.

Admittedly it does take more time to write and submit articles to article directories than it takes to submit your website or comment in forums but the rewards can be so much greater when it is done correctly.

The secret to writing and submitting articles to get the links to your online business website is to do the job consistently. This can often be difficult for many internet marketers, but there is a solution and that is to outsource the writing of your articles to someone else. There are thousands of freelance article writers online and many of them can be found on websites such as Elance.com, but if you know your subject and your audience well then it is usually quicker and better to write your own articles.

If you decide that you would rather have someone else ghost write your articles then make sure that you supply them with the keywords you want them to focus on. In the beginning it is best to use keyword phrases which are less competitive as this will give you the opportunity of getting your website ranked more quickly. You can find good keywords to use by researching them using a tool like Google Adwords which is free to use. The more focused and relevant your keywords are the better the one way back links to your website will be.

You can develop your own article marketing strategy, but one way to do it is to write say five articles in one day, in other words make a day that you do nothing but write articles, and then trickle the submission to the various directories. If you are short of time there are some excellent article submission sites that will submit your articles for you and they will submit to hundreds of article directories. Some of them even have a service where they will trickle you articles so that they are spread out over a period of time to the different directories, and they also have the software for you to basically spin the article so that the same article appears differently in the various directories.

It is well worth investing in an article submitting service as they can do the job much more efficiently than you can yourself and it will save you many hours of boring labor. Another way to build link popularity to your online business website is by bookmarking your articles which will increase traffic to your site and improve the number of sales that you make.

Women manage daily finances while men invest for the future: study

Women may run the household finances, but are they sufficiently involved in planning for their long-term financial future?

The 12th annual TD Women Investor Poll found that half of Canadian couples share responsibility for most household finances, but among couples where responsibilities are divided, women are more likely to handle day-to-day finances, while men are more likely to manage the investments and long-term retirement planning.

Fewer women than men said they are responsible for managing investments (32% vs. 49% respectively), dealing with financial professionals (33% vs. 44% respectively) and planning for retirement (30% vs. 38% respectively). Women were more involved than men in household budgeting and spending (49% vs. 24% respectively) and paying bills (58% vs.49% respectively).

"There are several barriers that women tell me they face when it comes to managing their family's financial future," says Sandy Cimoroni, president, TD Mutual Funds, and executive sponsor of TD's Women Investor Strategy. "Many women say that they just don't have time to dedicate to managing their investments, or they feel they don't have the knowledge that they believe is necessary to make sound investment decisions."

When asked to define financial success, both men and women define it as having enough money saved to have a comfortable retirement (women: 80%, men: 74%). However, only approximately one-third say they feel very well-prepared when it comes to their retirement savings, with more men than women feeling well-prepared (men: 34%, women 27%).

"Our research showed that women are less likely than men to feel that they are financially successful or on track to reach financial success. In fact, only 60% of women felt financially successful or on track to reach financial success, compared to 68% of men," says Kim Parlee, vice president, TD Wealth Management. "While it's essential to plan and save, it's also really important to feel confident about your investments and the progress you're making towards your financial future. Mapping out your financial goals for retirement, and your strategy to help you meet them, can help increase your confidence."

TD Bank Group commissioned Environics Research Group to conduct an online custom survey of 2,014 men and women. All respondents have investable assets and sole or shared responsibility of the household financial planning or investment decisions. Responses were collected between August 24 and 30.

Why Mumbai is so gripped by the status of right-wing Bal Thackeray

Mumbaikars closely followed news that one of their city's most controversial political leaders may be critically ill, resurfacing questions about succession.?

Reports that controversial right-wing leader Bal Thackeray was critically ill put Mumbai on tense hold for much of Thursday while raising questions about the future of his party, the Shiv Sena, which controls the city government and is an important member of India?s opposition group, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

Parts of Mumbai reportedly shut down Thursday in anticipation of trouble from Sainiks, as the members of his party are known, gathered in large numbers near the residence of the Thackerays. By evening, the 86-year-old?s condition was reported to be stable and a parade of the city?s powerful and famous was visiting the leader?s home amid tight security.?

Thackeray's declining health is putting the spotlight on the fragile state of his party,?which has been riddled by succession struggles for more than a decade and has seemed unable to move beyond its founder?s polarizing identity politics.?

In the four decades of its existence, the Shiv Sena has targeted ??sometimes violently???south Indian migrants to the city, Muslims, so-called symbols of?Western culture like Valentine?s Day, and more recently, north Indian migrants. Earlier this month, Mr. Thackeray reiterated his opposition to cricket matches between the Indian and Pakistani teams in a front-page editorial in the party newspaper,?Saamna, asking party activists to stop such matches from being held in the country.

Shiva's Army

A political cartoonist known for his barbed rhetoric, Mr. Thackeray formed the Shiv Sena (Shiva?s Army) in the 1960s in the wake of the successful movement for the formation of the state of Maharashtra with Mumbai as its capital. Not unlike Tammany Hall in New York, the Sena promoted the interests of local Maharashtrians or ?sons of the soil? against the influx of migrant workers to Mumbai, historically India?s most cosmopolitan city and its commercial headquarters, through a network of street cadres.

The Sena?s power grew in the 1970s and 1980s, at the expense of the Communists. Thackeray?s invocation of a proud, native identity especially through the historical figure of Shivaji, a 17th century Hindu Maratha warrior who fought the Muslim Mughals and established a Hindu kingdom, found resonance with disaffected young men at a time of declining industrial jobs. During the ?80s and ?90s, the party members? rough-and-ready tactics gave Thackeray the power to shut down the city.

Microsoft: Windows 8 selling well despite PC slump

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft says the latest version of its Windows operating system is off to a great start. Yet it remains unclear whether the revamped software will win over enough people to revive the slumping personal computer market.

About 40 million licenses to Windows 8 were sold in its first month on the market. Microsoft released the figure Wednesday in conjunction with the company's annual shareholder meeting held near its Redmond, Wash. headquarters.

But a prominent analyst who tracks Microsoft for Nomura Securities lowered his financial forecast for the company because he expects PC sales to continue faltering.

Although most of the world's PCs run on Windows, personal computers have been losing market share as more people embrace smartphones and tablet computers to consume and create digital content.

Exclusive: Calpers triggers legal fight with bankrupt San Bernardino over pension debt

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - America's biggest public pension moved aggressively against the bankrupt city of San Bernardino, California, on Tuesday night over the city's decision to halt payments to the fund.

The move laid bare a high-stakes battle shaping up between Wall Street and state pension funds over how they are treated when cities run out of money.

The powerful California Public Employees' Retirement System (Calpers) filed a legal motion declaring its intention to sue San Bernardino for millions of dollars in pension arrears, a move that the fund has never before had to make in a municipal bankruptcy.

San Bernardino, a city of 210,000 about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, filed for bankruptcy protection on August 1. Since then, it has halted its bi-weekly, $1.2 million payment to Calpers, saying it wants to defer any payments to the fund until fiscal year 2013-2014. Calpers says the city is already $6.9 million in arrears since August 1.

The San Bernardino bankruptcy is fast emerging as a precedent-setting case over how creditors, especially Wall Street bondholders and insurers, are treated in a municipal bankruptcy, because never before has a city seeking bankruptcy halted payments to Calpers or threatened its historical primacy as a creditor.

Under Californian state law, the contract between Calpers and debtor cities is viewed as inviolate and has been treated as such by state courts. Unlike Calpers, other creditors have historically been forced to renegotiate or forgive debt to debtor cities.

The Californian city of Stockton, also seeking bankruptcy protection, decided to keep current on all payments to Calpers, as did the city of Vallejo, which emerged from bankruptcy in 2011.

San Bernardino's decision to halt its payments, and its move on Monday night to include in a new budget an attempt to renegotiate the terms of its debt with Calpers, is uncharted territory for the pension fund. Wall Street bondholders and insurers have already indicated their intention to test Calpers' primacy as a creditor in the San Bernardino case.

Calpers, one of the biggest pension funds in the world, serves many cities and counties in California. It is San Bernardino's biggest creditor. The city, which has a nearly $46 million deficit for the current fiscal year, lists its unfunded pension obligations to Calpers at $143.3 million. Calpers says if the city halted its relationship with the fund immediately, the debt would be $319.5 million.

Under the U.S. bankruptcy code, all legal actions against a debtor city by creditors are stayed until the bankruptcy has been approved, or thrown out.

In the legal motion filed to the bankruptcy judge overseeing the San Bernardino case shortly before midnight on Tuesday, Calpers asked for that stay to be lifted so it could redeem its debt in a state court. It also said even if the stay was not lifted, it would still seek redress in a state court.

Calpers expressly stated that it was "concerned about inappropriate preferential treatment that might be given to other creditors" in San Bernardino's bankruptcy. Calpers has long argued that pension contributions cannot be touched, even in a bankruptcy.

The move by Calpers is the opening battle that could see the case move all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, America's highest court, said Karol Denniston, a Californian bankruptcy expert who authored part of the state's bankruptcy code.

All municipal bankruptcy cases, including San Bernardino's, are adjudicated in federal court. Calpers is in effect asking that the state law governing its contractual relationship with debtor cities not be trumped in federal court, Denniston said.

"We've never been here before," Denniston said. "This is the opening move in complex legal issue over how much power a federal bankruptcy court has over a state contract. The state statute, and Calpers, says Calpers always gets paid in full. This is the first time this has ever been tested."

Robert Glazier, a Calpers official, said: "This legal action would allow us to collect the employer contributions from San Bernardino which are required by state law, to maintain the integrity of the San Bernardino pension plan for its public employees and retirees and to avoid needless procedural disputes and additional legal costs."

Skid & the Too Tiny Tunnel (Hardcover)
By Jeffery Stoddard

Review & Description

Skid, the littlest yellow tractor in the equipment yard, wants to be mighty like the giant bulldozers, tall cranes, and massive diggers who tower over him. But all the big machines tell him he is just a dinky tractor with a putt-putt engine. While they are busy building a new road through the mountain, Skid is left behind to take out the garbage.

When disaster strikes and a tunnel the machines are digging collapses, Pillar, the biggest bulldozer, is left trapped in the rubble. Only a small opening is left at the tunnel entrance and the only one who can fit through the opening is Skid who is afraid of the dark.

Now it's up to the tiniest tractor to save the day. Can Skid find the courage to do what he was made to do and prove that he doesn't have to be big to be mighty? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV

Call of Duty: Black Ops II

I can't recall a first-person shooter that made me feel more like I was in the middle of an action movie than Call of Duty: Black Ops II. This, however, is not necessarily always a positive thing. The cinematic approach plays well enough (if never spectacularly) in the multiplayer and zombie modes that give this latest chapter in the venerable military-themed series its longest-lasting heft. But when similar techniques are applied to the single-player campaign, the results are more middling, especially in light of the sterling success of the?original Black Ops ?two years ago. Treyarch's follow-up to that super-smash hit has already obliterated sales records this time around as well, so it doesn't need much help finding an audience. But whether this burgeoning franchise-within-a-franchise can thrive with continued treatment of this sort is another question.

Medium-Rare Multiplayer
Let's start with what will be the meat of the Black Ops II experience for many: multiplayer mode. Treyarch has not toyed significantly with the formula, still giving players numerous options for facing off against others across the country and around the globe. "Core" missions include Team Deathmatch, Free-for-All, Search & Destroy, and Capture the Flag (all of which are also available in "Hardcore" mode, which removes the HUD and limits health), and eight others; you can also engage in in two types of "Combat Training" runs to hone your skills, or play four "Party Games" that put interesting for-entertainment-only spins on the weapons you can use and the rules you play by.

These are all enjoyable for what they are, although to what degree is determined by the people you play with. If you want to be guaranteed of having talented, trustworthy squad mates, you're better off creating a custom game and inviting the people you want to join you rather than trusting fate to provide you with worthy allies from the standard lounge system. In any event, it's easy to lose yourself in game after game, and we found that even playing on a below-average team didn't depress the fun factor too much.

You won't notice a lot of big changes in the everyday operation of Black Ops II's multiplayer mode, with one key exception: the new "Pick 10" character configuration system. With it, you can forgo established classes and instead create a new from scratch, customizing all the aspects of your play by using a points system that affects everything from weapons to perks. It won't appeal to everyone, but it strikes us as a clever addition that lets you personalize your multiplayer experience as much or as little as you want.

The Walking Dead
Not in the mood for a traditional multiplayer free-for-all? Zombies mode puts a fantastical spin on the shooting concept, dropping you into a closed location where you must defend against ever-increasing hordes of the raging undead.

"Survival" mode, in which you frantically try to acquire the weapons you need to decapitate the decaying masses and board up the entrances to your stronghold, is still on hand, but it has been joined by two others. "Grief" is a cool idea, in which two teams attack each other indirectly by luring the zombies against the opposing side. A campaign-style offering called "Tranzit" lets you move organically between maps in a way that imparts some much-welcome cohesion to what's been since its inception a quirky aftertaste to Call of Duty's more realistic flavor. Tranzit might even be too open-ended, as it can be difficult to discern exactly what you're supposed to do with all the options at your disposal.

These are, alas, hardly major innovations for the most part, but they're the only ones of real note in Zombies. Otherwise, this is standard, "shame the shambler" stuff that lacks the pungent immediacy of Call of Duty at its best. We imagine it's tough to think of that many ways to spice up a zombie shooter, which is perhaps stylistically over-specific as it is, but if this mode is going to continue to appear in future titles, it needs a facelift or it's going to get really boring, really quickly. (Unless you adore titles like Left 4 Dead, it might very well have already arrived there.)

Nexus 4 back in stock on T-Mobile USA site

Android Central

After swiftly selling out on the carrier's website just a few days ago, it seems T-Mobile USA is back with more stock of the desirable LG Nexus 4. As before, the phone is being sold for $199 on a two-year service plan with Tmo.

The LG-made Nexus phone has been quick to sell out via many online retailers, including Google's own Play Devices store. Previously, Google had directed would-be Play Store buyers to T-Mobile, however shortly after that notice went up Tmo's stock was also depleted.

T-Mobile is offering the 16GB version of the Nexus 4, which sold for $350 during the brief time it was available through Google Play.

In more good news for Nexus 4 customers, it seems the Google Play Store is also expecting more stock this week.

DR Congo's M23 rebel leader heads to Uganda for withdrawal talks

M23's reported connections with Uganda and Rwanda complicate a resolution in eastern Congo.

By Arthur Bright,?Staff writer / November 26, 2012

A woman carries her child in Minova, some 28 miles west of Goma November 26, 2012. Congo said on Sunday it would not negotiate with M23 rebels in the east until they pulled out of the city of Goma, but a rebel spokesman said Kinshasa was in no position to set conditions on peace talks.

The leader of the Congolese rebel group M23, which sacked the city of Goma a week ago, is set to meet officials in neighboring Uganda for negotiations over the group's withdrawal. But various reports indicate that M23 is operating under the auspices of the Rwandan government, suggesting that a resolution to the immediate crisis may require international pressure as well.

An M23 spokesman told Reuters that Col. Sultani Makenga, leader of M23, will meet with Ugandan defense chief Aronda Nyakayirima in the capital of Kampala on Monday to discuss M23's withdrawal from Goma. The Ugandan military could not immediately confirm M23's claim to Reuters, but stated that such negotiations were ongoing.?

"I am not aware of his arrival but I wouldn't be surprised if he were here because meetings have been going on and since Aronda has been tasked to coordinate the withdrawal (from Goma) he would need to talk to him (Makenga)," military spokesman Felix Kulayigye said.

Reports indicate that M23 and Congolese officials met on Sunday as well. The Associated Press writes that Ugandan Defense Minister Crispus Kiyonga said he was overseeing negotiations between the two sides, and Rene Abandi, M23's head of external relations, told AP that M23 representatives attended a two-hour meeting with Congolese President Joseph Kabila and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday, a day after a regional summit in Uganda that called upon M23 to withdraw from Goma. The DR Congo government denies involvement in any negotiations.

The resolution of the situation in eastern Congo is complicated due to the M23's connections with both Uganda and Rwanda. A United Nations report released last week asserts that both countries are providing support to the rebels, with the Rwandan military in active command of the group. AP writes that both Rwanda and Uganda have repeatedly denied supporting the M23 movement and have faced little international criticism over the allegations, but the report is apt to increase pressure on both countries.

The highly anticipated report from the U.N. Group of Experts said both Rwanda and Uganda have "cooperated to support the creation and expansion of the political branch of M23 and have consistently advocated on behalf of the rebels. M23 and its allies include six sanctioned individuals, some of whom reside in or regularly travel to Rwanda and Uganda."

Solid Internet Marketing Techniques For The Beginner ? DataGlove ...

Working to build a site to market your products, can be overwhelming. Trying to determine what will attract customers to your site can be a challenging task. Some tips and ideas are listed below that will help you with this task.

For your online business try the ?bill me later? option. Many customers like to pay right away. But there?s other?s who want to pay over a period of time. See if this option works for generating more sales and traffic to your website. You can do a trial period to determine if this works for you.

Making people aware of both the advantages and disadvantaged of your advertised product can make your audience trust your claims more. While you shouldn?t make the negatives of your product sound too bad, putting them in with the positives (which should be exaggerated somewhat) is a great way to earn your audience?s trust.

When you send a purchase to a customer by mail, consider including a sample in the box of a new product. For example, if you just got in some new long-lasting batteries you could include a pair in the box to run the electronics the person has bought. It?s a great way for them to test it out.

Use local business directories. Many online business directories will provide free listings. Get your business listed on as many as possible to attract more visitors to your site. Search for the directories that offer free listings, since there is no need to pay for something that you can get for free.

If you intend to spend money on your internet marketing efforts, go after traffic using the appropriate strategies. Pay-per-click (PPC) search engines will turn your money into favorable search rankings. Affiliate marketing programs will pay off other websites for driving traffic to yours. Once you decide to spend money for traffic, make sure you get the most bang for your buck.

Build other websites that revolve around your primary product or subject. Do not create websites that are junk. Take your time and include relevant information. This will keep people at your website longer, and you will be able to trust the links to your website, which is where you will bring in customers and make money.

Make a website for your business. This should be one of the first steps to market your business using the Internet. By setting up a website that is online you can expand your business because you will be able to reach more customers. This also makes it easier for existing customers to find you.

If your business is linked to affiliate businesses, consider brainstorming with other business owners. Combining thoughts and products, will help build exposure for both businesses and boost customer loyalty to both. If the business you choose to work with is competition, choose a neutral product that will not give them an edge.

Use color on your web page. A plain white web page is unlikely to do as much business as one that has an eye-catching color. Experiment a little to see what works best for you and the type of business that you are running. You can also change the style and size of the wording on your page, which will help to draw customers in.

After you get past all the scams out there and realize that internet marketing follows a logical path and not a miraculous one, you can begin to build a solid business. Follow this advice and you will start to turn your ideas into money. Eventually, you might just hit that six-figure mark.

This Trevo Review explains why this is a great internet business that allows you to work from home.

(AP) ? Syrian rebels captured a helicopter base just outside Damascus Sunday in what an activist called a "blow to the morale of the regime" near President Bashar Assad's seat of power, while the bombardment of a village near the capital killed at least eight children.

Activists said the children were killed when Syrian warplanes bombed the village of Deir al-Asafir just outside the Damascus. The village is close to suburbs of the capital that has been witnessing clashes, shelling and air raids between troops and rebels over the past months.

The Britain-based Syrian observatory for Human Rights said the bombardment of the village killed eight children. Another activist group, the Revolution Command Council said 10 children were killed when warplanes struck the village as they played outdoors.

An amateur video showed two girls lying dead in a street while the bodies of two bloodied dead boys were in the back seat of a car parked nearby. Several other wounded children were seen rushed for treatment.

Another video showed the bodies of two dead boys inside what appeared to be a makeshift hospital as others received treatment from injuries while lying on the floor.

The activist videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting about the events depicted. Syria restricts the access of reporters.

Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011 with an uprising against Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts. It quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists. Hundreds of children have been killed since the crisis began, according to activists.

The air base takeover claim showed how rebels are advancing in the area of the capital, though they are badly outgunned, making inroads where Assad's power was once unchallenged. Rebels have also been able to fire mortar rounds into Damascus recently.

The director of the Observatory, Rami Abdul-Rahman, said rebels seized control of the Marj al-Sultan base on the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday morning. He said at least 15 rebels and eight soldiers were killed in the fighting that started a day earlier. The rebels later withdrew from the base.

Rebels appear to be trying to take over air bases and destroy aircraft in order to prevent the regime from using them in attacks against opposition forces around the country.

The rebels have no protection against the attack helicopters and fighter jets that have been blasting their positions.

Rebels have been attacking air bases in different parts of Syria, mostly in the northern regions of Idlib and Aleppo.

In the battle at the base outside Damascus, Abdul-Rahman and Damascus-based activist Maath al-Shami said rebels destroyed two helicopters with rocket propelled grenades and captured a tank. They say the base, which is on the eastern outskirts of Damascus, houses several radar positions.

"This is a blow to the morale of the regime, because it is close to the heart of the capital," said Abdul-Rahman, referring to the base that is about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from Damascus.

Al-Shami said the rebels withdrew from the base after they captured some ammunition. He said they feared counterstrikes by regime aircraft.

An amateur video posted online showed rebels walking next to two destroyed helicopters. At least three other helicopters appeared undamaged. Black smoke billowed in the distance.

Another video showed several radar posts on hills inside the large compound. Parked military trucks stood inside as rebels roamed freely.

The Observatory also reported violence in other parts of Syria, including the country's largest city of Aleppo in the north and the capital itself.

It said rebels on Sunday captured a training base for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command near the Damascus suburb of Douma. The PFLP-GC is one of the Palestinian factions most loyal to Assad.

The PFLP-GC said in a statement late Saturday that the base was under attack. It said that thousands of activists and fighters who fought against Israel were trained at the base over the past 30 years.

Also Sunday, the Observatory said a bomb targeted a bus in the southern village of Othman, killing at least five people and wounding dozens. It said rebels and troops clashed in the southern region of Quneitra on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said residents found 12 bodies in the Damascus suburb of Daraya, scene of heavy clashes between rebels and government troops over the past few days.

State TV said troops clashed with al-Qaida militants in Daraya, killing some of them and confiscating a mortar that they were using in their attacks.

The station said that troops killed an al-Qaida affiliated Palestinian militant known as Abu Suhaib in the Damascus suburb of Hajira. It said his group was behind several bombings in Syria that killed and wounded dozens of people.

Assad's regime blames the revolt on a foreign conspiracy. It accuses Saudi Arabia and Qatar, along with the United States, other Western countries and Turkey, of funding, training and arming the rebels, whom it calls terrorists.

Krugman Compares UK And US National Debt - Business Insider

Paul Krugman posts a simple chart that makes a profound point.

It compares the yield on UK debt vs. US debt.

uk debt vs. us debt

What should stand out for you, instantly, is that the two countries borrow at virtually identical rates, and have for years.

What this should show to people is that much of the popular stories that people tell about sovereign debt is a myth.

Countries that borrow in their own currencies and can "print" at will don't have default risk, so their borrowing costs are an expression of expectations of future interest rates and growth. The US has been notably profligate since the crisis. The UK (under Cameron) has been prematurely austere. The upshot: it hasn't mattered much on the yield front.

The fact that the UK borrows so cheaply also undermines the idea that somehow the US' reserve currency status is a big game changer ? it's not.

If you want to get cute, you can throw in German, Japanese, and Australian rates, too, all of which have moved similarly, and all of which have pursued different monetary/fiscal approaches.

image

Trying to tell a good story about why this or that country has low borrowing costs tends to become difficult.

That being said... as Krugman acknowledges, each of these countries has seen interesting currency fluctuations, the more realistic avenue for global markets to express their "vote" on a country's policy.

Video: Blind patient reads words stimulated directly onto the retina

Friday, November 23, 2012

For the very first time researchers have streamed braille patterns directly into a blind patient's retina, allowing him to read four-letter words accurately and quickly with an ocular neuroprosthetic device. The device, the Argus II, has been implanted in over 50 patients, many of who can now see color, movement and objects. It uses a small camera mounted on a pair of glasses, a portable processor to translate the signal from the camera into electrical stimulation, and a microchip with electrodes implanted directly on the retina. The study was authored by researchers at Second Sight, the company who developed the device, and has been published in Frontiers in Neuroprosthetics on the 22nd of November.

"In this clinical test with a single blind patient, we bypassed the camera that is the usual input for the implant and directly stimulated the retina. Instead of feeling the braille on the tips of his fingers, the patient could see the patterns we projected and then read individual letters in less than a second with up to 89% accuracy," explains researcher Thomas Lauritzen, lead author of the paper.

Similar in concept to successful cochlear implants, the visual implant uses a grid of 60 electrodes?attached to the retina?to stimulate patterns directly onto the nerve cells. For this study, the researchers at Second Sight used a computer to stimulate six of these points on the grid to project the braille letters. A series of tests were conducted with single letters as well as words ranging in length from two letters up to four. The patient was shown each letter for half a second and had up to 80% accuracy for short words.

In this video, a patient reads words with the Argus II setup using the camera and not the direct braille stimulation. Credit: Second Sight

"There was no input except the electrode stimulation and the patient recognized the braille letters easily. This proves that the patient has good spatial resolution because he could easily distinguish between signals on different, individual electrodes." says Lauritzen.

According to Silvestro Micera at EPFL's Center for Neuroprosthetics and scientific reviewer for the article, "this study is a proof of concept that points to the importance of clinical experiments involving new neuroprosthetic devices to improve the technology and innovate adaptable solutions."

Primarily for sufferers of the genetic disease Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), the implant Argus II has been shown to restore limited reading capability of large conventional letters and short words when used with the camera. While reading should improve with future iterations of the Argus II, the current study shows how the Argus II could be adapted to provide an alternative and potentially faster method of text reading with the addition of letter recognition software. This ability to perform image processing in software prior to sending the signal to the implant is a unique advantage of Argus II.

Balloon Juice ? Blog Archive ? Feeling Nostalgic

By John Cole November 23rd, 2012

Just got off the phone with my surrogate family, and it made me feel old as hell.

I got off active duty in June of 1992, and when I did, the very first thing I did was go to a Grateful Dead concert at Buckeye Lake with my old school friends. It was awesome. But then I had to get into school and make something happen, so I applied to WVU, and with the help of an old family friend, I got in, and I had a couple credits transfer. This old family friend had a son named Ben in the Naval Academy (Ben was my childhood friend in Bethany and we beat each other up all the time before they left my hometown in 1979 and moved to Morgantown- I still remember throwing up in their car on the way to Star Wars- he later went on to graduate at the top of his class at Annapolis and become a nuclear submariner and is still the smartest person I have ever known), who had met this guy who was also going to WVU. At any rate, I went to a BBQ at their house, and they said you have to meet this guy named Jack. ?You?ll like him,? they said.

Jack and I became fast friends, and he was an Army Ranger and a sophomore, and played rugby, and he introduced me to a shitload of people. Basically, my social life as a 22 year old ?freshman? was just hanging out with his friends. After a while, I hooked up with the lacrosse crowd, but he and I were already good friends. We made plans to move in together and share a house, and we had another roommate who was a former Marine who lived with us. Since we were all non-traditional students, we didn?t have to even think about traditional housing, and we just rented a big house. The running joke was no one would ever rob us, because there were probably fucking land mines all around the house, given our past experiences.

Before we moved in, Jack went to DC to work as an intern for some jackass in the House, and I stayed and kept the house running and clean and put in an AC. But the whole summer, every time I went out, I would hear rumors from the more subtle folks, and from other people who wore abrupt and dickish, ?Hey- your buddy is a fag. Why do you hang out with him??

At the end of the summer, I went away for a couple of days, and came back and found Jack in my bed after his internship at DC was over. Not for the reasons you are probably thinking, but because I had the only air conditioner in the house. He then told me- ?I know you have heard all the rumors, and they are true. I?m gay.? I just responded- ?I?m really not as stupid as I look, I already knew, and I don?t care.?

I?d never given a shit, one way or another, about people being gay. I remember when I was on active duty and the issue of homosexuality was brought up, I?d always joke ?I wish you all were gay. It would make my odds at the bar a shitload better.? But this was a real turning point for me. I?d never known anyone who was openly gay, and the first person I meet who is gay turns out to be my best friend and someone I looked up to and still do. It forever changed me, and is probably part of the reason that even when I was a full-fledged wingnut, I was never a gay basher and attacked those who were.

I became close friends with Jack?s mother and father (his dad was a very successful dentist) before they knew he was gay, and they had us out to dinner at least once every three weeks. I used to be terrified of his mother and would always make Jack drink a bottle of wine with me before we went to dinner, but that is another story (we never were able to successfully lie to her- she always always sniffed through all our bullshit). I became good friends with all his younger brothers, and watched all of them grow up to be doctors. We went on vacation together. I felt like the fifth brother in the family. Later, when I went to grad school, I lived with his brother for three years while he went to dental school.

I actually love them all as brothers, too. Last year, their father, who always treated me like a son and was the most generous, decent, kind human being on the planet, died of cancer. It was quick. Not quick for the family, who watched him die over a six month period, but quick in the sense that one of the most vibrant, decent, kindest human beings died faster than he ever should have.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, I just got off the phone with Jack and his brothers and their mom and all their wives and children, and this was their first Thanksgiving without their dad there. And it just made me nostalgic. I?ve had such a good life and been blessed with such good friends. At the same time, I was hopeful, because my story is the same story that is changing the way Americans look at gay rights.

And I am rambling.

CETIS Analytics Series: Analytics for Learning and Teaching ...

CETIS Analytics Series No. 2012:AS103

By Mark van Harmelen and David Workman (Hedtek Ltd). November 2012

Link: CETIS Analytics Series Vol1, No3. Analytics for Learning and Teaching (pdf)
Link: CETIS Analytics Series Vol1, No3. Analytics for Learning and Teaching (MS Word .docx)

A broad view is taken of analytics for Learning and Teaching applications in Higher Education. In this we discriminate between learning analytics and academic analytics: uses for learning analytics are concerned with the optimisation of learning and teaching per se, while uses of educational analytics are concerned with optimisation of activities around learning and teaching, for example, student recruitment.

Some exemplars of the use of analytics for Learning and Teaching are to:

  • Identify students at risk so as to provide positive interventions designed to improve retention.
  • Provide recommendations to students in relation to reading material and learning activities.
  • Detect the need for, and measure the results of, pedagogic improvements.
    Tailor course offerings.
  • Identify teachers who are performing well, and teachers who need assistance with teaching methods.
  • Assist in the student recruitment process.

Conclusions drawn in this paper include:

  • Learning and academic analytics are underutilised in UK Higher Education.
  • There are risks to adoption of analytics, including that measures that are not useful are revealed through analytics, and that staff and students lack the knowledge to use analytics. However, there are visualisation techniques that help significantly in non-specialist adoption.
  • There is also a risk for institutions that delayed introduction of analytics may lead to missed opportunities and lack of competitiveness in the UK Higher Education market. Our judgment is that this is the most compelling risk to amortise.
  • Institutions vary in analytics readiness and maturity, and may to a greater or lesser extent be ready for the introduction of analytics or increases in the use of analytics.
  • We stress that there are different scales of analytics projects, from small projects that can be undertaken under a limited budget and time frame, to large projects that may involve, say, creating a data warehouse and employing experienced analytics staff to build complex models.
  • A good way of starting is to undertake small limited-scope analytics projects. These enable institutions to develop staff skills and/or raise the profile of analytics in the institution.
  • Large-scale analytics may involve the activities of staff who may variously be characterized as analysts, modellers or data scientists. These staff are often in short supply, but reference to local departments of statistics may provide expert help.
  • There are commercial solutions that work in conjunction with commonly adopted Virtual Learning Environments and student information systems. Some of these are ?plug-and-play? and do not require analyst input. However, before purchase, they should be evaluated for suitability, particularly with respect to intuitional pedagogic approaches and concerns.

Sometimes smaller can be better?even when it comes to reading. The tiny Kobo Mini ($79 direct) is one of the smallest?ebook readers we've tested. But the size is deceptive, as it still packs a 5-inch E Ink screen, which is just an inch less than you'll find on the average Kindle or Nook. And unlike Sony's now-discontinued 5-inch Reader, the Kobo Mini supports touch.?If an ebook reader could be called "cute," it's certainly this one. That said, you're not really saving any money by going with the smaller screen size. If a diminutive reader appeals to you, the Kobo Mini is worth getting, but a number of flaws dampen our enthusiasm about it. The base Amazon Kindle costs $10 less and is our Editors' Choice for entry-level ebook readers, thanks to its superior contrast and faster page turns.

Design and Reading
The Kobo Mini measures just 5.2 by 4 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.7 ounces. The size is the biggest reason why you'd buy the Mini?or why you'd avoid it, for that matter. It's smaller than a paperback, and barely bigger than the 4.5-inch-plus screens that come on many of today's smartphones, although smartphone owners probably aren't the Mini's main target market.

The top edge contains a sliding power switch, while the bottom edge houses the micro USB charger port. It's covered in a grippy, soft touch material that's similar to what Barnes & Noble uses. You can get a Mini in black or white.?Unfortunately, the Mini loses the Kobo Glo's memory card slot.?There's 2GB of internal storage?still good for roughly 1,000 books?which should be plenty for most people. It limits your sideloading and PDF storage options, though.

The 5-inch touch screen offers 16 shades of gray, but the smaller panel isn't the whole story. Instead of E Ink Pearl, the Mini uses an older Vizplex V110 panel with noticeably poorer contrast. Worse, the Freescale 508 800MHz processor is a step down from the 1GHz CPU in the Glo?and the lost 200MHz turn out to be really important. The Kobo Mini feels sluggish, and takes roughly twice as long to turn a page as the Kobo Glo does.

The Mini also has the same problem as the Glo, in that not every screen touch registers unless you're quite deliberate about it. Thankfully, it also doesn't black the screen out completely with each page turn, so Kobo is still using the same caching engine here.

Still, while much of the above sounds bad on paper, it's mostly in comparison to newer models. You get seven fonts in 24 different sizes, plus adjustable weight and sharpness settings, so you can customize the reading experience pretty heavily. Despite fiddling with these settings?some are tucked under an Advanced menu within the Font Setting page?I couldn't get text to look quite as clear or crisp as on the base Amazon Kindle. The Mini was still fine for normal reading, though.

Other Features, Store, and Conclusions
While reading, you can highlight text, look up words in the built-in dictionary, and share passages on Facebook or Twitter directly from the device. The Mini also comes with Reading Life, which tracks your reading speed and lets you score achievements, which, to me, seems a bit silly. Kobo claims the battery lasts for roughly one month of reading on a single charge with Wi-Fi turned off.

The Kobo Mini connects to the Internet via 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi on 2.4GHz networks only. Kobo's online store has over 2.5 million books, and most are priced similarly to Amazon or Barnes & Noble's selections. You get ePub, PDF, and TXT file support, but not MOBI; either way, ePub support is the most important, as it opens up access to public library lending and a host of download sites you can't access with a Kindle. You can buy books on the Kobo Mini, but as with the Kobo Glo, it's a lot easier to shop on the desktop website.

If the size of the Kobo Mini speaks to you, it's probably still worth getting, but it's not where the state of the art is?even in the same price range. Our current entry-level Editors' Choice is the latest version of the base Amazon Kindle, which costs either $69 or $89, depending on whether the Special Offers bother you enough to spend the extra $20. (They certainly bother me enough.) That Kindle lacks a touch screen, although it's a standard 6-inch E Ink display instead of the Kobo Mini's 5-inch version. The Kindle also has no memory card slot or ePub compatibility, but it has significantly better contrast and faster page refreshes. Finally, the base Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch costs $20 more; it's the next least expensive touch-screen reader after the Kobo Mini, and gives you a larger touch screen with better contrast and a memory card slot.
