Sony Announces VPL-HW50ES Full HD 3D Home Projector at IFA 2012 (31/8/2012)

Sony has announced its latest market-leading Full HD 3D home projector, the VPL-HW50ES. With the already competitive VPL-HW30ES making strides in 3D home projection, Sony has ensured this latest model encapsulates the latest technology and delivers a premium 3D home cinema experience.

With a plethora of new features that draw on Sony?s latest technology, the VPL-HW50ES sits at the forefront of advanced Home Cinema Projection. This includes utilising an adapted version of Sony?s clever ?Reality Creation? which was developed for the EISA Award winning VPL-VW1000ES Sony 4K home cinema projector. Digital Reality Creation technology employs an originally developed digital signal processing algorithm to restore any information lost when packaging from original content to disc, recreating high quality, colour-rich, full HD images.

A 1,700lm brightness has been achieved by improving the light efficiency of the lamp and optimising the optical block. This combines with a new Bright Cinema and TV Mode to achieve 30 per cent more brightness than the previous model, without losing colour reproduction.

Sony?s contrast enhancer technology and Optimised Advanced Iris 3 algorithm combine to give the projector a dynamic contrast ratio of more than 100,000:1. The contrast enhancer works by analysing each scene and then automatically optimising contrast in real-time by compensating for dark and bright parts of the image. Additional features such as high brightness and Sony?s 3D Crosstalk reduction system, with SXRD panels, enhance the 3D image even further.

Commenting on the VPL-HW50ES, Tak Nakane, product manager, Sony Europe said: ?When we launched the VPL-HW30ES we knew that we?d set a high standard. In announcing the VPL-HW50ES, Sony is confident that it?s raised that bar again, setting the benchmark for home cinema projection. Home projection technology is advancing at a rapid pace, Sony is ensuring it?s at the forefront of new developments, speaking with customers regularly to gain feedback and then channelling this knowledge into creating high-end, reliable products that are enjoyed by consumers worldwide.?

As well as encompassing Sony?s latest technology, the VPL-HW50ES also features a number of functionality upgrades that make it more user-friendly. These include a built-in 3D transmitter, a wider lens shift that makes its V shift range become +- 71 per cent and a whisper quiet 21db maximum noise output.

The VPL-HW50ES is available in black and white across Europe from the end of October 2012.

This Apple Bull Thinks Facebook Will Double

There?s no shortage of Facebook (Nasdaq: FB??) bears. Facebook bulls, on the other hand, are somewhat harder to come by. Well, that camp has one prominent analyst within its ranks that thinks investors should pick up some Facebook shares.

The Munster Mash
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is out with some bullish comments today. Of course, Munster is one of the most prominent and vocal Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL??) bulls in the universe, and has been pounding the table for years on end (don?t his hands hurt by now?) to invest in the Mac maker. For example, Bloomberg Businessweek ran a profile on the longtime Apple bull back in April, and compiled a graphic showing how Apple has performed relative to his price targets over the years.

?

Source: Bloomberg Businessweek.

Some of Munster?s product predictions haven?t panned out, such as when he said in 2009 that Apple would release an Apple TV by 2011. That was even before the first iPad was unveiled, and he was already talking TV. When it comes to the overall financial performance, though, Munster still has a respectable iTrack record.

The new apple of Munster?s eye
As bullish as Munster has been on Apple over the years, he?s now turning his attention to the dominant social network, and his sentiments echo those he felt about Apple in earlier times. He thinks Facebook?s future potential growth is monstrous relative to other large tech companies, and shares are now trading at a substantial discount.

One potential catalyst he predicts on the horizon is, potentially, the addition of a "want" feature, which would be similar to the site?s popular "like" button that has become a social phenomenon. A "want" could be used for the benefit of advertisers using Facebook?s Sponsored Stories push, which is one of its important moves towards mobile monetization.

Sponsored Stories are off to a strong start, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg saying on the last conference call that, at the end of June, they were up to a run rate of over $1 million in daily revenue, with half of that coming from mobile. Imagine a user seeing a Sponsored Story about a product that a friend just purchased, and instead of merely "liking" it with a click, they felt strong enough that they could click a "want" button. That?s a user that you can bet advertisers will pay top dollar to pitch to, and it?s a social angle that Google (Nasdaq: GOOG??) would have a hard time replicating, as its Google+ network still lags in users relative to Facebook?s.

Munster rates Facebook shares at "overweight," complete with a whopping $41 price target. To date, the only time Facebook has reached that high was when it briefly touched $45 on its IPO day, only to come crashing down. His target represents over 100% upside from current prices, so Munster is hoping for shares to double in the near future.

On the flip side, Munster acknowledges that Facebook has another lock-up expiration coming on November 15 that could add some selling pressure, as freshly released shares hit the market. Still, he doesn?t see any major long-term effects after the expiration.

Stop me if you?ve heard this one before
Back in June, he told CNBC that investors who were ?focusing too much on the near-term are "missing the whole point," but when looking at the long-term, it was a "no-brainer." Munster also believes Facebook will start playing a larger role in e-commerce, as it further taps its platform. He makes a strong case for opportunities in e-commerce and, if you believed him then, when shares were trading near $32, then today?s prices closer to $19 are a downright steal.

I?ve been keeping a close eye on Facebook, myself, and there are numerous reasons I?m bullish on its long-term prospect, I remain on the sidelines, however, until the valuation stars line up with its monetization abilities. Grab a copy of this premium report, where I break down Facebook?s monetization throughout the world, and look at what it would take before I?d consider it a buy.

Pinterest-Obsessed Retailers Are Missing The ... - Business Insider

socialcommercesumchilogo_edited-1.jpgLearn the latest strategy in e-commerce and social media at Social Commerce Summit on February 6, 2013, in New York. Speakers include hot startups and major brands. Reserve your ticket now.

InSparq

Here's why Zappos should be making more money from Pinterest.

?

New York e-commerce entrepreneur Richie Hecker thinks retailers are doing social all wrong.

His company, InSparq, makes technology for social commerce, and Hecker tells us they're seeing better results than Zappos, which recently reported that a share on Pinterest only generates 75 cents in new sales on average.

InSparq's customers see 92 cents per share on average, but that gets a lot better depending on the category?$1.40 for cosmetics retailers, and $5.09 for clothing.

Zappos, an online shoes and clothing retailer owned by Amazon.com, could be doing things better, according to Hecker. Its Pinterest-sharing tool, for example, just posts an image and a product name. Including some "suggestive copy," Hecker says?for example, "Here's my latest find on Zappos: [product name]"?could boost its results.

But Hecker has a much simpler suggestion: email. An email share generates $5.90 on average across InSparq's network.

Groupon, One Kings Lane, and a ton of other retailers have found that email's an effective marketing channel. It's just not as sexy as Facebook or Twitter.?(To its credit, Zappos does include email as a sharing option.)

Parts of Arctic now 'like a giant slushie' (+video)

Sea ice in the Arctic has hit a record low, and scientists say that it could accelerate global warming.?

Long-term thinning of Arctic sea ice combined with an intense, windy storm over the Arctic in early August contributed to a new record low for sea-ice extent, scientists said Monday (Aug. 27).

Al Jazeera's Nick Clark joined an expedition travelling deep into the Arctic Circle to Qaanaaq, in Greenland.

"It used to be?the Arctic ice cover?was like a big block of ice," said Walt Meier, a research scientist with the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) during a press conference held after the new record low was set on Sunday (Aug. 26). "Now it's become crushed ice and that is a lot easier to melt and melt more quickly. Parts of the Arctic have become like a giant slushie. [That] makes them more vulnerable to these types of storms."

The storm persisted over the central Arctic Ocean for several days, bringing warm and very windy conditions to the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas, followed by low temperatures. Strong wind and wave action from storms like this can increase melt by breaking up ice, according to a NSIDC report following the storm.

On Sunday (Aug. 26), Arctic sea-ice extent fell to a new record: 1.58 million square miles (4.10 million square kilometers), surpassing the previous low, 1.61 square miles (4.17 square kilometers) set on Sept. 18, 2007, the NSIDC reported. [10 Things to Know About Sea Ice]

Sea-ice watchers?saw this coming, at least to some degree.

"As early as maybe July we were able to project that the 2012 ice cover will likely be similar to 2007, but then in August, when we have this storm, the values for 2012 started to go down lower," said Josefino Comiso, a sea ice researcher with NASA.

Sea-ice extent describes the area of ocean?covered at least 15 percent by sea ice?as measured by satellite instruments. Continuous satellite measurements of sea-ice extent date back to the late 1970s.

Sea-ice extent grows and retreats with the season every year. While there are significant fluctuations in this cycle from year to year, by the late 1990s satellite measurements indicated there was a strong downward trend in sea-ice extent, said Claire Parkinson a climatologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

By the end of the 1990s, submarine data showed the ice was thinning as well, Parkinson said.

The old ice, which survives year after year and maintains thicknesses of 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.6 meters), has been disappearing from the Arctic waters, Meier said. Now, Arctic sea ice has become thinner and is more easily melted or pushed around by storms, he said. "The Arctic Ocean is really a different place than it used to be," he said.

The loss of Arctic sea ice has serious implications for the animals ??polar bears?and walruses ? that use it as habitat.

NHK developing hybrid renewable energy-powered video camera for use in disaster areas

NHK developing hybrid renewable energypowered camera for use in disaster areas

You can always count on Japan's NHK to come up with new, exciting and innovative ways to bring us video coverage. The latest project? A wind- and solar-powered robot camera designed for situations such as natural disasters. Loaded with a 1,200 Ah battery, even if the elements don't bless it with sun and air, it can keep filming for two to three days. The combination of wind turbine and solar panels obviously allow it to generate more power than either method on its own, with the turbine reportedly generating 1 kW at 11 m/s wind speeds. A special power-saving mode prevent it draining too fast when full functionality -- such as the built-in wireless, cellular and satellite broadcasting systems aren't needed. Currently the prototype is installed on a rooftop while battery and power-generation are fully tested, but it's hoped that this could lead to further developments for disaster area broadcast equipment. Or -- here's hoping -- power-cut-proof sports coverage.

Romney is Behind When it Comes to Empathy

We're in convention season and it looks like Romney is lacking on questions of empathy. Meanwhile the two candidates are tied in North Carolina, DNC territory, while Obama holds leads in Connecticut and Iowa. Here's our guide to today's polls and why they matter. ?

RELATED: Is Medicare Helping or Hurting the Republicans?

Findings:?Whereas 54 percent of registered voters think Obama understands their problems compared to 42 percent who don't, only 41 percent of voters think Romney does compared to 50 percent who don't.?
Pollster:?CBS News
Methodology:?Telephone calls with 1,218 adults ? including 1,051 registered voters ? August 22 through 26 the margins of error for both samples +/-3 points.
Why it matters:?CBS notes that ?these numbers come days before Romney's speech at the Republican National Convention, where The New York Times has reported?the campaign is working to "overcome perceptions that Mr. Romney is stiff, aloof and distant." Meanwhile, our own Elspeth Reeve today explained how Ann Romney the task of humanizing has fell to Ann.
Caveat:?Romney still polls better than Obama when it comes to creating jobs, as Tom Kludt of Talking Points Memo notes. He's still in the red: 45 percent don't think he has a "clear plan" while 43 percent do, but he's in better shape than Obama.?

RELATED: National Polls Give Obama a Cushiony Lead

Findings:?A poll out of North Carolina shows Obama and Romney tied in North Carolina with 43 percent each among registered voters.?
Pollster:?SurveyUSA for High Point University?
Methodology:?Telephone interviews with 600 North Carolina adults of which 540 are registered August 18 through 23 with a margin of error for the presidential candidate question at +/-4.3 percent.
Why it matters:?North Carolina will play host to the Democratic National Convention next week. This poll keeps in line with the poll from the state that came out yesterday, which showed Romney and Ryan with a one point lead.?
Caveat:?The poll yesterday focused on likely voters, whereas this one focuses on registered voters. Likely voter screens?can often help the Republicans.

RELATED: Perry Now Leads in Iowa, in Part Thanks to Birthers

Findings:?Obama leads in Connecticut 52 percent to Romney's 45 percent among likely voters.
Pollster: Quinnipiac?
Methodology:?Telephone interviews with 1,472 likely voters August 22 through 26 with a margin of error of +/-2.6 percentage points.
Why it matters:?Even though that seven-point lead may look pretty wide, poll director Douglas Schwartz explains that it's a "is a far cry from his 23-point victory in 2008 over John McCain."?
Caveat:?The state isn't entirely blue. The Senate race between Republican Linda McMahon and Democrat Chris Murphy is a toss up with McMahon leading 49 percent to 46 percent.?

RELATED: Obama Up in Virginia and Wisconsin, Down in Colorado

Findings:?Obama's lead is Iowa is shrinking, now leading only 47 percent to 45 percent.
Pollster:?Public Policy Polling
Methodology: Automated poll of 1,244 likely Iowa voters August 23 through 26 with a +/-2.8 percent.?
Why it matters:?According to PPP, Iowa's a swing state where Obama had held a wider lead: in July it was at five points, in May it was at 10. Meanwhile, today Politico reports that the Romney campaign is targeting young voters in the state: it has "a full-page ad in the Iowa State Daily railing against Obama's record on youth unemployment, and Romney supporters are planning a campus rally just hours before the president is scheduled to visit Tuesday." In this poll Obama leads 50 percent to Romney's 40 percent among voters under the age of 45.?
Caveat:?PPP leans left.?

Egypt's Morsi names Christian as one of four assistants

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi named a liberal Christian, a hardline Islamist and a woman as assistants Monday as he sought to reach out beyond his power base in the Muslim Brotherhood to rival groups.

Morsi's appointments, announced just before he left for China on a key trip abroad, were seen as a balancing act between Egypt's Coptic minority, which has felt threatened by Morsi's Islamist roots, and the Brotherhood's ultra-conservative Salafist rivals.

Morsi wanted to give representation to "all strands of political opinion and all components of society," his spokesman Yasser Ali said, announcing the appointments.

Samir Morcos, a Coptic writer engaged in the dialogue between Islam and Christianity, was named "assistant for democratic transition", in a gesture to the minority community which has been hit by mounting violence since the overthrow of veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak early last year.

Morsi had pledged during his presidential election campaign to include Copts in his administration but the community was unhappy over the composition of the new cabinet sworn in earlier this month which included just one Copt -- one of two women ministers, both in low profile posts.

The Copts, who make up between six and 10 percent of Egypt's 82-million-strong population, were the target of sectarian attack under Mubarak too but dozens have been killed since his ouster.

Washington last month voiced concern over "both the Egyptian government's failure to curb rising violence against Coptic Christians and its involvement in violent attacks".

As a counterbalance, Morsi named as "assistant in charge of relations with civil society" the leader of the Salafists' Al-Nur party, Emad Abdel Ghafour.

The party won nearly 20 percent of the seats in multi-phase parliamentary elections that concluded earlier this year and the appointment was seen as a move to counter accusations that under Morsi the Brotherhood was monopolising power.

Morsi did reward one of his own, naming Essam al-Haddad of the Brotherhoood's Freedom and Justice Party assistant for "external relations and international cooperation."

He named a woman "assistant for political affairs" -- Pakinam al-Sharkawi, a political sciences professor at Cairo university.

Sharkawi, who wears the veil despite not being affiliated with any Islamist party, told the independent Al-Masri al-Youm newspaper on Monday that the Brotherhood is an "expression of a moderate Islam."

The four assistants are complemented by a broader group of 17 "presidential advisers" also drawn from across the spectrum

"It is a diverse team, reflecting different currents of opinion, which is good," Sharkawi told AFP after her appointment. "I don't think that there will be conflicts within the team," she added.

There had been mounting calls in the press for the president to establish a broader-based administration.

"Morsi must prove that he is the president of the whole country and not just the head of one tribe," columnist Abdallah Senawi wrote in Monday's edition of independent daily Al-Shorouk.

On August 12, Morsi had significantly boosted his authority by retiring veteran Defence Minister Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and scrapping a constitutional document that gave the military legislative and other powers.

Morsi, who took office on June 30, is the first president of Egypt to come from an Islamist camp and also the first civilian head of state since the overthrow of the monarchy in 1952.

Non-Profit Organization Empowers Business Owners

PITTSBURGH ? Building Bridges for Business ? a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering small business owners by providing one-stop access to resources, information and partnerships ? is achieving its organizational mission ? providing small business owners with unprecedented connections to

local agencies, contacts and other necessary business resources.

?Our team has certainly worked hard to push the organization forward and improve visibility among small business owners,? said Linda Handley, founder, Building Bridges for Business. ?But we have also been very fortunate to have the support from a host of pivotal partnerships, particularly the offices of Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.? In addition, Building Bridges for Business has partnered with local universities, such as the Center for Women?s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University and the Small Business Development Center at Duquesne University.

Sue Malone, President of Strategies for Small Business, after a recent event helping Pittsburgh Small Businesses for free, said, ?Building Bridges does an outstanding job offering the small businesses of Pittsburgh an opportunity to soar.? ?I am in many cities working with Small Businesses and I have never

seen such dedication as I see in Building Bridges to offer such a unique opportunity for the small businesses of Pittsburgh.? ?The organization hosted its fourth sold-out event this summer, Small Business Works, at the Kingsley Association. At the event, over 200 local small business owners listened to a

message from Malone, and every business that asked received assistance with funding, free advice on a formal business plan and/or free?marketing collateral, such as logos and press kits.

?Thanks to the support of our sponsors, donors and partners, we are reaching our goals and achieving our

vision,? said Amanda Wodzenski President of Building Bridges for Business. ?The contributions and

support from so many organizations and individuals has made starting a business and sustaining success

in Pittsburgh simpler, and our local economy will continue to benefit as a result.? Other live events ? all of which have sold out ? include fall 2011?s Welcome to Oz, featuring guest

speakers Dr. Winslow Sargeant, chief council for advocacy, U.S. Small Business Administration and Luke Ravenstahl, mayor, City of Pittsburgh at the Fairmont Hotel. Last summer, Google?s Pittsburgh headquarters opened its doors to local business owners and the organization held a Young Entrepreneursevent.

Aside from live events, Building Bridges for Business also launched Pittsburgh?s first-ever monthly TweetChat in September 2011, using the hashtag #SmallBizPgh and featuring small business experts, entrepreneurs and government officials from across the United States. Pat Robertson Shuns Adopted Children of Sexual... | Gather

Pat Robertson has long been a mouthpiece for the religious zealots of the United States, as well as those who are dead against abortion in any case -- even in cases of rape and incest. Now the televangelist moron is making comments against children of abuse, warning parents not to adopt them. So what does this mean for those who follow the guy? Well if you're still following this man and his far-out ideals, you're part of the problem.

Orphanages are already overflowing with unwanted children as it is, and many of them are sadly victims of sexual abuse. The number of abused children in the United States alone reaches as high as 3.3 million children -- and those are only the statistics of reported incidents. Approximately five children die per day in the United States at the hands of an abusive person. The number of children in foster care in the U.S. needing homes surpasses the number of abortions performed in the United States. There are over 400,000 children in foster care in the United States and that number grows every year. The number of abortions in the year 2010 and 2011 didn't surpass 300,000. The far right and ultra religious zealots like Pat Robertson often demand that women give their children up for adoption instead of abort, but what happens when those children become victims of abuse?

Studies have indicated that children in foster care are at higher risk of experiencing abuse both sexual and non sexual than not being in foster care. So to hear that Pat Robertson pretty much hates child abuse victims is enough to make any sane person's skin crawl. Pat said the following about child victims of abuse:

"A man doesn't want to take on the United Nations, and a woman has all these various children, blended family, what is it - you don't know what problems there are. I'm serious. I've got a dear friend, an adopted son, a little kid from an orphanage down in Columbia. Child had brain damage, grew up weird. And you just never know what's been done to a child before you get that child. What kind of sexual abuse has been, what kind of cruelty, what kind of food deprivation, etc. etc. You don't have to take on somebody else's problems. You really don't. You can help people - we minister to orphans all over the world, we love helping people. But that doesn't necessarily mean that I'm going to take all the orphans around the world into my home."

So this is straight out of the mouth of one of the pro-life movement's biggest messiahs. Do his followers feel the same way? If they're still listening to him and watching him, then most likely.

USA: Kenworth Expands Dual LNG Tank Line>> LNG World News

Kenworth Expands Its Dual LNG Tank Line

Kenworth is expanding its line of green products by offering factory-installed, dual liquefied natural gas fuel tanks on Kenworth T800s powered by the 15-liter Westport GX engine.

?By equipping a Kenworth T800 with dual LNG fuel tanks, operators now have the option of running the truck up to 700 miles on a single fueling,? said Alan Fennimore, Kenworth?s vocational marketing manager.

The Kenworth T800, when equipped with the Westport GX, can be ordered in a gross combination weight of up to 80,000 pounds for over-the-road operation, with additional ratings exceeding 100,000 pounds available for certain applications.

For the T800, the GX engine is available in power ratings from 400 to 475 horsepower and torque ratings from 1,450 to 1,750 pounds-feet, giving it similar horsepower and torque ratings to its diesel engine counterparts.

For the dual LNG tank configuration, Kenworth uses a Dewar flask (or cryogenic tank) system that is like a large Thermos bottle inside a metal cylinder. Each LNG fuel tank, which is designed to keep the fuel in its liquid state at minus 260 degrees, can hold up to 60 diesel gallon equivalents of fuel.

The dual LNG tank configuration is only available on the Kenworth T800, equipped with a day cab or the Kenworth Extended Day Cab.

Over the next two to three years, Chesapeake Energy plans to work with Clean Energy Fuels to install 150 LNG publicly accessible fueling stations for heavy-duty trucks along major interstate highway corridors. Plus, engine manufacturer Westport Innovations of Vancouver, B.C., and Shell announced last year the launch of a co-marketing program in North America aimed at providing customers with a better economic case for adopting natural gas-powered vehicles by addressing fuel supply and customer support.

Already UPS operates a number of LNG-powered Kenworth trucks along the Salt Lake City to Las Vegas corridor, and UPS and CR England operate LNG-powered trucks from southern California to Las Vegas, Fennimore noted.

?With the addition of new fueling stations, more and more truck operators will be looking seriously at adding natural gas power as an alternative to diesel,? he added.

Still, Fennimore cautions that a dual tank configuration is not for everyone.

?We suggest truck operators who are considering adopting natural gas take a closer look at their operations to determine if they truly need an additional tank,? Fennimore said.

Since the dual tank configuration is only available with the Westport GX engine featuring Westport?s high-pressure direct injection technology, the truck must also have the space below the cab for the emission controls system, which can take an additional 4 to 5 feet of frame rail space. That means the dual tank configuration must be installed on a Kenworth T800 with a minimum 220-inch wheelbase.

Samsung loses high-stakes patent trial against Apple

SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) - A U.S. jury awarded Apple Inc $1.051 billion in damages from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, finding that the Korean company infringed some of Apple's valid patents.

The verdict in the high-stakes trial between the two tech giants was still being read in a federal courtroom in San Jose, California, and not all of the key legal findings had been announced.

Here's What's Actually Killing The Economy... The ... - Business Insider

One of the most important stories in the U.S. economy these days is the rise of extreme inequality.

Over the past 30 years, a larger and larger portion of America's income growth has gone to those in the top 10% of incomes, and especially those in the top 1%. This is a major change from the prior 60 years, in which the top 10% and the bottom 90% shared in the income gains.

A stark and startling example of this trend is the fact that, adjusted for inflation, "average hourly earnings" in this country have not increased in 50 years.

A recent Pew study confirms that America's middle class has recently experienced a "lost decade."

Since 2000, the Pew says, "the middle class has shrunk in size, fallen backward in income and wealth, and shed some?but by no means all?of its characteristic faith in the future." Pew cites statistics showing that middle class earnings and net worth have plummeted since the mid-2000s and that about 85% of the middle class say it is harder to maintain their standard of living than it was 10 years ago.

The reason the decline of the middle class is important is not just about fairness. It's about the health of the economy as a whole.

Collectively, the middle class represents enormous buying and spending power, and in the past 60 years this spending power has helped the U.S. economy become the envy of the world.

But now, however, the middle class is increasingly strapped. And the resulting impact on spending is constraining the growth of companies that sell products and services to American consumers.

The causes of this middle-class decline are many, from globalization (jobs being shipped overseas), to the decline of private-sector unions, to the wholesale embrace of a "shareholder value" religion that values profit over everything else that companies produce. But the result of the trend can be seen vividly in two charts.

First, wages are now at an all-time low as a percent of the economy.

Second, corporate profits are now at an all-time high.

To truly "fix" the U.S. economy, corporations are going to have to be persuaded to invest more of their excess profits in their employees, both by hiring new employees and paying existing employees more. "Wages" to employees become spending money for those employees, and the spending produces revenue for other companies. If corporations can collectively be persuaded to reinvest more of their profits in their people, in other words, they will help restore their own revenue growth.

Henry Ford famously decided to pay his workers more than he had to to keep them. One result of this was that the workers made enough money to be able to buy Ford's cars, and this made Ford more successful. Another result, which is considered irrelevant in some business circles, is that Ford employees were able to live middle-class lives. This helped not only Ford, but the country.

Our current economic problem is not likely to be solved by the government, which possesses neither the power nor the competence to make it happen. The problem will have to be solved by the private sector. And one important part of that solution is for corporations to share more of their wealth with one very important (and often overlooked) corporate constituency: Their employees.

Questions you Should Ask your Accountant About your Tax Return ...

?

Your accountant may be helping you with financial planning and forecasts, loan applications, investment advice, audits and many other things. However, do you know all you need to know about your?taxes? Most accountants know a lot about the complicated?tax?system, but may not know everything there is to know. Here are three questions you should ask your accountant about your?taxes.

1. Does your accountant have an arrangement with a third party?tax?support service?

Even though accountants know a lot about?taxes, they cannot be experts in all aspects and will need to consult?tax?specialists sometimes. Your accountant should know when they are out of their depth and need an expert opinion.

Your accountant may try to do some research to find answers or they may contact a larger accounting firm that has dedicated support for smaller accountants. They may also call help lines where organisations provide support for accountants and?tax?advisers.

2. Does your accountant know all of the?tax?savings your business could be making?

People ask this question all the time, but it is good to be a little more specific.

  • Ask your accountant if you are claiming everything you possibly can including use of home for work, mileage, your telephone and subsistence.
  • Are there any VAT schemes for smaller businesses that would help reduce your?taxes?such as using cash accounting or a flat rate scheme?
  • Would it be a good idea to set up a company for your business to get more?tax?benefits?
  • Are you paying yourself or your employees in the most?tax?efficient way? You may be giving dividends, drawings or wages.

3. Are your accountant?s?tax-reducing strategies legal?

It is legitimate to minimise your?tax?liabilities and claim all available allowances and reliefs.?Tax?relief can be claimed for expenditure that has been incurred exclusively and wholly for business purposes. Your accountant can plan your business affairs to keep your?tax?liabilities as low as possible as long as it is within the law.

What your accountant should not be doing is deliberately or dishonestly allowing you to evade paying?tax. They should not claim?tax?relief for expenses that have not been incurred and for expenses that do not relate to your business. They should also not exclude any of your taxable income from your accounts or?tax?returns.

There are severe consequences to illegal?tax?returns?for you and your accountant. There will be revenue investigations and possible huge backtaxes?to pay. There will also be interest on the back?taxes. Penalties may be up to 100 per cent of the?taxes?owed. This is all a huge waste of time and money and isn?t the worst. If your accountant has done all of the above, you could be prosecuted and sent to prison.

It is tempting to let a professional accountant take care of the?taxes, but to protect your business and yourself as well as to pay the least amount of?tax?that you legally can, it is wise to ask your account a few questions.

Dale is a Business and Finance Writer from Sydney, Australia. He writes for many leading business and finance news sites and believes these questions are important for getting the most out of your accountant and tax return. Dale is currently writing his second book on Accounting Practices.

How to Protect Yourself and Business from Social Media Assaults

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Source: pinterestschunt442.blogspot.com via Larry on Pinterest

?

The social web has become so popular these days. From the international social sites like facebook, twitter, MySpace and others to few national gathering webs that house interested people from a particular country, we are at that era when kids look up to opening a social media account rather than being so worried by homework and other commitments.

Yes, we all spend time on the social web; chatting with friends and family, making new friends and pushing the limits of our businesses to reach more social audience from various parts of the globe. However, what we may not have realized is that hackers, identity thieves and other cyber criminals have suddenly shifted their attention to social platforms. Who would blame them; they go where the land is green, and with nearly a billion users on facebook, who said the land is not green on the social web?

Hence if you don?t want to lose your social media account details to social-network scammers, phishers and cyber criminals, here are a few tips that may be of help.

Use Modern Browsers and a Security Suite

I suppose we have all known the importance of using a security suite, especially if you visit the internet at all. If you haven?t, why not source a free security packaged and install it in your system at the very least? While this may not totally protect you from strong attacks, it can help shield minor security threats.

Additionally, it is necessary that you use modern browsers. The latest versions of Internet Explorer, FireFox and Google Chrome are all built with some protective features and settings meant to protect users from dangerous sites, links and to help control suspected activities that may have previously went through in the background.

Beware of Links

Unless you truly know and trust the sender, any link that tends to take you out of the social networking site to watch a certain video or photo should be thoroughly examined. Most times hackers may even gain control of your pals account and use it to target his friends and social connections. Hence if you weren?t able to ascertain the authenticity of a particular link from your pal, why not send him a note asking what it?s all about?

Additionally, the social web is full of short urls. This is more rampant on Twitter where users try as much as they can not to exceed the 140 character limit. However, the worst is, unless when stated, there is no way you can really know what is happening on the destination page unless you click the link.

To this end, if you click to any page that request your social password please leave immediately even if the page looks exactly like facebook, twitter or any of the other social sites. If you have a facebook store and went on to hand over your details to the people behind this phishing site, imagine what would become of your business?

On the other hand, if you have fans and followers you would want to direct to your money site, always tell them what to expect from the destination page these will even help to presale them. For instance, I get a lot of social traffic to my digital product review blog featuring product options like Mixbook coupon, Pinnacle Studio codes and many others, but I made sure to tell my social audience what to expect from any page I am sending them to. And despite having great results with this, I am yet to witness any short comings.

Use Hard-To-Guess Passwords

You may have known this but it is worth mentioning again. It is important that you don?t use your first name, last name or nick name as your password. Properly varying your passwords by using capital and small alphabets, numerals and symbols will help shield off those attackers that may try using texts and items around you to hack your accounts.

The social web is amazingly providing us with a lot of personal and professional benefits. But while we enjoy these opportunities, let us not forget that there are always the ill-thinkers who are patiently waiting to rip us off the fruit of our sweat and even drag our name on the mug in the process.

Giant star caught devouring alien planet

A swollen star near the end if its life has been caught devouring one of its own planets ? a scenario that could one day be replayed on Earth when our own sun dies in billions of years, scientists say.

Astronomers discovered the cosmic crime scene while studying an ancient star that has expanded in its old age to became a so-called "red giant." The star, called BD+48 740, is older than our sun and much bigger. Its radius is 11 times larger than that of our sun.

As the star swelled into a red giant, it probably absorbed its innermost planet, researchers said.

"A similar fate may await the inner planets in our solar system, when the sun becomes a red giant and expands all the way out to Earth's orbit some 5 billion years from now," study team member Alex Wolszczan, an astronomer at Pennsylvania State University, said in a statement. Earth orbits the sun at a distance of about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers). [How the Sun Will Die (Video)]

Two key pieces of evidence identified the star as a planet-killer, researchers said.

First, the astronomers found abnormally high amounts of lithium, a rare element in the universe, inside the star. That fact alone hinted that a missing planet may be involved.

"In the case of BD+48 740, it is probable that the lithium production was triggered by a mass the size of a planet that spiraled into the star and heated it up while the star was digesting it," said Wolszczan, who led the team that discovered the first planets beyond our solar system, back in 1992.

Then there was the strange orbit of a giant planet discovered around the star. The huge planet is about 1.6 times as massive as Jupiter and circles the star in an extremely elliptical orbit.

"We discovered that this planet revolves around the star in an orbit that is only slightly wider than that of Mars at its narrowest point, but is much more extended at its farthest point," said study team member Andrzej Niedzielski of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland. "Such orbits are uncommon in planetary systems around evolved stars and, in fact, the BD+48 740 planet's orbit is the most elliptical one detected so far."

The gravitational fallout of a second planet plunging into the parent star could have been enough to toss the observed alien planet into the chaotic orbit seen by the researchers.

"The highly elongated orbit of the massive planet we discovered around this lithium-polluted red-giant star is exactly the kind of evidence that would point to the star's recent destruction of its now-missing planet," said study team member Eva Villaver of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in Spain.

Still, Villaver said catching such an event in the act was an "improbable feat."

The international team of astronomers used the Hobby-Eberly Telescope at the McDonald Observatory in Texas to study the star BD+48 740. The study's lead author is astronomer Monika Adamow of Nicolaus Copernicus University. Astronomer Grzegorz Nowak, also of Nicolaus Copernicus University, also participated in the study.

The research into the case of the planet-killing star is detailed in a study appearing online in the Astrophysical Journal.
