(AP) ? Time Warner Inc. got a boost from its movie studio and cable TV networks in the last three months of the year, and the company expects growth to continue in 2012 even with the end of its lucrative Harry Potter franchise.

Fourth-quarter net income grew slightly as revenue increased 5 percent. Adjusted earnings for the quarter and the growth forecast for this year topped Wall Street's expectations.

Time Warner, which owns Warner Bros., HBO, CNN, Time and People magazines and other media properties, also raised its dividend by 11 percent and said it plans to expand a stock buyback program.

Its stock rose 50 cents, or 1.3 percent, to $38.60 in midday trading after the results were announced Wednesday.

Time Warner released "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" on home video on Nov. 11, contributing to higher revenue at the Warner Bros. studio.

That growth came even as the quarter was compared with a period that included the November 2010 theatrical release of the next-to-last installment of the series. That movie, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1," went on to sell nearly $950 million in box office tickets worldwide.

With the series ending, the company needs new ways to sustain growth. Time Warner said midnight IMAX screenings of the new Batman movie in July were already selling out. The company was also expecting heavy interest in the first of two "Hobbit" movies and "Dark Shadows" from director Tim Burton.

The company said growth in adjusted earnings should be in the low double-digit percentages this year. Adjusted income was $2.89 per share in 2011, meaning it could range from $3.18 to $3.32 in 2012. Analysts were expecting $3.16.

And Harry Potter remains alive through theme parks. Comcast Corp.'s Universal Studios is building a Harry Potter attraction inside its existing Hollywood theme park and expanding one in Orlando, Fla. Time Warner expects significant increases in licensing fees starting in 2014.

For the fourth quarter of 2011, Time Warner's net income rose to $773 million, or 76 cents per share, compared with $769 million, or 68 cents per share, a year earlier.

Adjusted for one-time items, the company earned 94 cents per share. That beat Wall Street's expectations of 87 cents per share, according to a survey by FactSet.

Revenue grew to $8.2 billion from $7.8 billion a year ago and beat analysts' expectations for $8.06 billion.

Revenue in the television business grew 5 percent to $3.5 billion. The company saw a 16 percent increase in content revenue, including licensing fees from HBO shows such as "Sex and the City" in the U.S. and "Game of Thrones" abroad. Subscription revenue for HBO and other cable channels increased 5 percent, and advertising revenue increased 2 percent.

An NBA lockout, which delayed the start of the pro basketball season, hurt advertising. Although the company said fan enthusiasm has returned in the current quarter, some advertisers have already shifted their money elsewhere.

Warner Bros. revenue grew 7 percent to $3.9 billion on stronger home entertainment and video game releases and new subscription video-on-demand agreements. That was offset partly by lower revenue from theatrical releases and television licensing fees.

Besides "Harry Potter," Time Warner released "The Hangover Part II" on DVD and other home video during the quarter, along with the video game "Batman: Arkham City." The new subscription agreements included deals with Netflix Inc. and Hulu for content produced for the CW television network, jointly owned by Warner Bros. and CBS Corp.

Warner Bros. also benefited from licensing the TBS hit "The Big Bang Theory" to syndication.

Revenue at the Time Inc. publishing division fell 1 percent $1 billion.

Time Warner also said it will raise its quarterly dividend to 26 cents per share, to be paid March 15 to shareholders of record on Feb. 29.

The company also announced plans to buy back up to $4 billion in stock, on top of the nearly $5 billion it had already repurchased since the beginning of 2011. Buybacks boost the company's stock price by concentrating profits among fewer outstanding shares.

In a statement, CEO Jeff Bewkes said both decisions reflect "our confidence and our continued commitment to strong shareholder returns.

The Best and Worst Super Bowl Ads

Coca-Cola brings back its polar bears, who are watching the big game in what appears to be their Arctic man-cave. This spot, and two companion Ursus maritimus spots later on in the game, turned out to be my biggest disappointments of the night. I count on Coke to bring it every year with an epic, heartwarming ad that blows out all the stops. These spots were mere trifles. If they cost a bundle to make, I sure didn?t sense that money up on-screen. And, given the presence of furry animals, the ads could have been waaaay more adorable. (Where, I ask, were the polar bear cubs? There?s always room for cute baby bears, Coke.) I?m still not clear on how or why polar bears came to be associated with Coca-Cola, and frankly it might be time for the brand to part ways with them. Coke would have been much better served by going to the well again with Mean Joe Greene. He?s still alive?I checked!

Why you should skip the extended warranty

Most of the time, that initial offer for a service contract or an extended warranty is way overpriced and does little for you.

I don?t like high pressure sales situations.

Skip to next paragraph Trent Hamm

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Recent posts

Whenever I find myself in a situation where some cheesy salesperson is trying to give me the hard sell on some product, I find myself walking away. Even more so, I usually find myself getting a negative gut impression of the product being sold, one that?s usually reinforced when I go home and do the research only to find that the product is overpriced or underwhelming.

Case in point: when Sarah and I bought our Prius in 2009, most of the people at the dealership were friendly and hands-off, but there was this one guy who we interacted with that tried to do the hard sell on a service contract.

We were ushered into a small conference room by him where he attempted to do some kind of hard sell on us on a service agreement. It came off like one of those police interrogations on television.

After about a minute, we told him we weren?t interested. I got up to leave and he said, ?Now, just hold on a minute??

I told him, flat out, that I was walking out that door and if I was stopped from doing so, we were leaving the dealership without the car.

That?s how I often react to the hard sell. I just walk out of the room. I don?t trust the ?hard sell? and I?m certainly not going to listen to it. If your product is so questionable that you have to resort to the ?hard sell,? I?m not interested.

Of course, a big part of the reason I walked out is because, most of the time, that initial offer for a service contract or an extended warranty is way overpriced and does little for you. It?s a questionable product, which is part of the reason why they went for the ?hard sell.?

For example, if you?re looking for a service agreement for your car, you?re going to want to make sure that the contract you?re being offered does not merely duplicate things that are already found in the warranty. You?re also going to want to carefully read over the exclusions, because things like ?normal wear and tear? make the service contract nearly worthless (as they?ll claim almost everything is ?normal wear and tear? and thus excluded from the contract). These two factors alone will eliminate most service contracts you could buy.

If you?re still interested in finding one, shop around. Check with various auto repair shops in your area and ask if they offer service contracts. If they do, ask for a copy and review it carefully. The vast majority of contracts that you find will have exclusions and restrictions that make them a pretty poor value.

What about an extended warranty? These usually just extend the terms of your car?s warranty. However, they?re not a particularly good deal, either, because most of the defects in a car show up before the end of the normal warranty and the warranty often excludes things like ?normal wear and tear? (just like that service contract). It?s much like buying an extremely overpriced and very limited insurance policy for service on your car.

In my opinion, your best move is to take the money you would have spent on these things and put it into a savings account. Then, tap that money only when you actually need repairs to the car (repairs that the service contract wouldn?t have covered anyway).

Storm goes east after dumping on Colorado (AP)

DENVER ? A stretch of Interstate 70 reopened Saturday morning, after near-zero visibility had forced officials to close all 160 miles of the westbound lanes between the Kansas state line and metro Denver and a 70-mile stretch of eastbound lanes from metro Denver to the plains town of Limon.

The most powerful storm of the winter season pounded Colorado with up to 6 feet of snow in the Rocky Mountain foothills and forced the cancellation of more than 600 flights in Denver before heading east toward the central plains Saturday. The airport wasn't reporting any cancellations Saturday.

Blizzard conditions that hit the eastern Colorado plains, including 5-foot drifts in parts of Elbert County, began easing.

Light snow was falling intermittently in the Denver area early Saturday, but the bulk of the storm was moving out of the state, forecasters said.

National Weather Service meteorologist Robert Koopmeiners said all winter storm warnings have expired in Colorado, but the several counties in the state's eastern plains remain under a blowing snow advisory.

However, a winter storm warning was issued for parts of western Nebraska and northeastern Kansas and into southwestern Iowa.

A band of heavy snow stalled over Nebraska, dumping nearly 13 inches in some spots.

Agate, a small town on the closed section of I-70, reported more than 2 feet of snow by Friday night and winds gusting to 25 mph. Other towns in eastern Colorado reported more than a foot of snow and similar wind speeds.

The snow was a welcome boost to several ski resorts that have suffered below-average snowfall this season. But while Echo Mountain near Denver celebrated 55 inches of new snow from the storm, the storm only dusted larger resorts, such as Vail, with a few inches in the central Colorado mountains.

"It's been fantastic," said Scott Gales, a spokesman for Echo Mountain about 25 miles west of Denver. Skiers and snowboarders had to wait until the afternoon to get to the snow Saturday at Echo because of a previously scheduled extreme obstacle course Snow Dash in the morning.

"It's made it just a bit more of a challenge, but what's a snow dash without some snow," Gales said.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center issued warnings for slopes east of the Continental Divide until noon Saturday, saying 2 feet or more of new snow could easily overrun the weak, existing snow pack.

Most travelers apparently heeded storm and blizzard warnings. A few trucks were involved in crashes ? none serious ? on I-70, and Denver traffic was relatively smooth on Friday, said Gene Towne of the Colorado Department of Transportation.

"The accident situation hasn't really been that bad except the usual fender-benders we have during the evening commute," Towne said.

The storm had caused some 600 flights to be canceled at Denver International Airport, which averages 1,700 flights daily. Southwest Airlines, a key carrier at the airport, cancelled all of its flights for most of the day but resumed them late Friday.

Koopmeiners said snowfall across the Denver area ranged from 14-20 inches. Nearly four feet covered the Pinecliffe area, while there was 18 inches near Boulder and 14 inches in the capital city itself.

For many ranchers in drought-stressed eastern Colorado, the storm brought much-needed relief.

"Basically, this storm is going to be a real blessing because of the moisture," said Scott Johnson, who owns the Flying Diamond ranch near Kit Carson, about 130 miles southeast of Denver.

The Flying Diamond got 3 to 4 inches of snow, which was preceded by rain. Some of Johnson's other ranchland got a foot of snow.

Other ranchers' cattle were giving birth as the storm hit.

"Anything that was calving we moved in the barn," said Skylar Houston, a partner at the Aristocrat Angus Ranch about 35 miles north of Denver. Ranch hands had to feed other cattle because they couldn't graze through 6-inch snow, Houston said.

In Alaska, transportation officials urging motorists in the state's largest city to stay home over the weekend if they can so roads can be cleared as another winter storm blasted Anchorage.

The city was expected to get 6 to 10 inches of snow, with up to 15 inches on the city's upper hillside, said Dan Peterson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Anchorage.
